What is linear, recycling and circular economy?
A linear economy is where we make, use and dispose of resources and materials and replace with new.
A recycling economy is where we use waste materials and turn them into new materials or objects.
A circular economy (or circularity) is one in which we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life.
Why a circular economy is important
As well as creating new opportunities for growth, a more circular economy will:
- Reduce waste
- Drive greater resource productivity
- Deliver a more competitive economy
- Position us to address emerging resource security/scarcity issues in the future
- Help reduce the environmental impacts of our production and consumption.
The circular economy is more than just a buzz phrase. With the global population predicted to approach 9 billion people by 2030, we are using more resources than the planet can provide. Our future depends on reusing what we have in a sustainable way. Fortunately one resource that is unlimited is innovation, and many companies are developing ingenious ways to reduce, reuse and recycle.
